Country & Picnic Races

Get together a group of friends for a day at the races. Bring along a big hamper of food, a few bottles of champagne, some rugs to sit on – lovely. Place a few bets on the nags you like the look or names of. The best of what the Melbourne Cup offers ...in the bush (yes, of course there’s a best dressed prize for the ‘ladies').



The Jockey Club's of the region invite you for a day out.

The characters you can meet:

• The Dedicated Punter: out to beat the odds - and the bookies
• The Horselover: enjoys being close to the action in a way you can’t at a big city meet
• Mixed Singles: (usually 2 - 3 couples) out for a fun day, a few champers and an intuitive flutter , 'how can a horse with that name lose'

• Extended Family Picnickers: mum, dad and the kids, uncle Bill and the couple next door (along with the esky and a delicious chicken salad for lunch)
• The Boys: for a bet and a beer
• The Girls: for a dress up and a giggle
• The Socialiser: who gets to see and be seen

Queanbeyan and Moruya hold regular race days (check out the Local Events pages). Braidwood has its once a year equivalent to the Melbourne Cup. It’s a fun day, a dress up day, a champagne and picnic race day that attracts so many people that the serious punters are a minority. All Australia, they say, stops for the Melbourne Cup, you should stop for the Braidwood Jockey Club meet sometime soon!
