PicnicsPack a feast-filled hamper and you can picnic virtually anywhere from Canberra to the coast: by a creek, atop a mountain, by the ocean...Following are a select few spots from the countless possibilites that this region has to offer.
Around Queanbeyan Googong Dam & Foreshores: This delightful picnic spot offers al fresco diners a few options. It features wood and gas BBQ facilities or cleared grassy areas if you're more the sandwich and rug type. This location also provides fresh drinking water, toilets and an array of short walks. The Googong Dam and Foreshores area is a great spot for a traditional family picnic. Molonglo Gorge: This area is not only good for picnics (it features ample facilities and a sizeable children's play area) but it's also good for a post-lunch bushwalk. Around Braidwood Monkittee Creek Reserve: This patch of ground doesn't feature facilities but delightful grassy spots along the creek. The Monkittee Creek Reserve is located just minutes from the shops and cafes of Braidwood. It's located just over Monkittee Creek Bridge, to the left as you drive into town from Canberra. Ryrie Park: This is a picnic spot that you can't miss - simply because it's so easy to find! Ryrie Park is located right in the heart of Braidwood. It's the one that's adjacent to the public swimming pool with the sizeable childrens playground and swings. It also features an electric BBQ and ample seating. But, my suggestion is to grab an old fashioned rug and enjoy a feast in the sunshine. Outskirts of Braidwood Monga National Park: Magical Monga - as it's refered to - is a true nature lovers' paradise. It's possible to picnic wherever tickles your fancy in this largely untouched haven, but your best bet is to utilise the signposted picnic sites. These designated areas not only feature facilities such as tables, BBQs, toilets and such, but they provide useful information that highlights plant and animal life in the park; along with invaluable insights into the many walks in the area.
PLEASE NOTE: Ensure that you take the remnants of your feast and any other rubbish with you as there are no bins in this area. Bombay In close proximity to Braidwood on the Bombay Road is the Bombay picnic area that overlooks the delightful Shoalhaven river. It features fabulous views, ample shade and privacy. Picnic tables, wood BBQs and pit toilets also make it a convenient lunch stopover. If you plan to picnic here in the warmer months, ensure that you pack your swimmers. Araluen Araluen Creek Reserve: Visit this delightful stone-fruit growing area with its own micro-climate. The Araluen Creek Reserve features BBQs and basic facilities; while the nearby Araluen Valley Hotel is perfect for liquid refreshments. Nelligen Clyde River Foreshore: This picnic location would have to rate as one of the best (and easiest to locate) in the region. It has water views, plenty of seating and gorgeous views of the Clyde River that's rated as one of the cleanest in the world. Take your feast filled hamper or grab some fish and chips from the nearby township. Please note that some of these picnic spots don’t have fresh water, garbage bins or wood supplies for the BBQs, so be prepared and remember to take your rubbish with you. If you have a favourite spot that we've missed, by all means let us know! * Image Acknowledgements - credits page |
